Interoperability

General Information

Railways holds one of the most important places in European policy. Since the mid-19th century, the tasks and objectives have changed: in the past, the main influence on the development of the railways was the transport of industry and the needs of the army; nowadays, society is confronted with new problems at European and global level - on the one hand, environmental protection and climate change, and on the other, the removal of borders and barriers between countries.

In the historical development of railways, differences in rail networks were created as a series of bottlenecks that nowadays can be easily resolved with aviation. Railway interoperability is the modern way of phasing out these obstacles, or to put it another way, interoperability is an initiative of the European Commission to help achieve a single market in the rail sector.

Achieving full interoperability is a goal that cannot be achieved in the short term because of the high investment needed to replace existing requirements with technical specifications.

The challenge today for the Member States of the European Union is to find the most effective way to increase interoperability.
